An Illinois native, Katherine Sunder transferred from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, IL to attend Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH and to train with Nancy. She is currently in her senior year studying psychology with plans to do graduate work in criminal and forensic psychology.
Kate started riding western when she was 10 years old, and at age 13, she began riding dressage on her Arabian named Lacey. Dressage was an obvious strong point, and she continued training and improving her skills. She campaigned for the Region 2 North American Young Riders Championships in 2004 and 2005 aboard Rejent, a Holsteiner stallion by Ratibar. Although she didn't make the team, she finished in the top 10 out of 20 other riders.
In 2004, Kate showed Rejent at Prix St. Georges and won the Region 4 Jr/Yr Prix St. Georges Championship and was highpoint FEI YR. In 2005, she received scores such as 69.5% and 66.6%. She purchased Leclusive (Lou) in 2003 and began boarding at SendonWay in March 2005. Lou is a beautiful gray Dutch Warmblood and is even a grandson of Secretariat. They were selected to receive the Wiley Arts Award of the NA-KWPN in 2006.
Kate purchased Nancy's horse Fendi in 2006. Already trained through Intermediare I, Fendi and Kate won Young Rider classes at local schooling shows and competed for the NAYRC, finishing in the top seven young riders in Region 2 in 2006. The pair showed at Devon that fall and won Reserve Champion in the YR Team Test and the 4 th Level Freestyle at the 2006 Region 2 Championships.
Kate was one of four young riders selected for the US Dressage Foundation’s Olympic Dream Program in 2006. She has received her USDF Bronze and Silver Medals, as well as the Silver Freestyle Bar.
